Open House
Open House
Open House was envisioned as a 3,700-square-foot collection of structures designed to offer barrier-free access to every area of the property while preserving the natural topography of the site. The buildings sweep in a gentle arc along level grade, creating an intentional separation between public and private zones. Two primary structures establish these areas, a third forms the garage, and a fourth creates a dedicated entry vestibule. Together, their placement shapes a protected interior courtyard and allows the public spaces to open fully to the sculpted landscape.
Inside, each space carefully manipulates volume and proportion, moving between moments of compression and openness to guide the experience throughout the home.
Each building is distinguished through subtle variations in material, color, proportion, and finish.
• The most public building, and the tallest, is wrapped in dark brown stacked-bond emperor brick.
• The most private building, containing the bedrooms, features light brown running-bond closure brick.
• The garage structure, constructed of white running-bond CMU, serves both as a functional anchor and as a lantern that illuminates the outdoor patio.
• The entry vestibule, cast in place from concrete, intentionally compresses the experience before opening into the main living space.
These shifts in tone, pattern, and scale establish a clear hierarchy that moves from formal to informal, from dark to light, and from enclosed to open.
